    LIFEBLOOD OF EXCELLENCE

    DRIVE

Drive is the manifestation of purpose. It sustains clarity and supports the integrity of vision. It nourishes the kind of strength that excellence demands.

We believe that managing wealth is among the noblest of endeavors: In truth, clients invest their trust. One must correspond such confidence with the highest level of integrity: Protect the result of decades of toil, experience, ingenuity; Support and facilitate its future growth. These are the mandates. No space for excuses.

The Transformation of the Wealth Management Industry

Clients have been showing their dissatisfaction with traditional wealth management platforms. Market volatility during the past 15 years has damaged trust. New products and services are not enough. We believe established business models are mostly incapable of delivering true advisor-client interest alignment.

Know What You Pay; Pay for What You Get

Investors carry the burden of the advisory costs regardless of the direction of the markets. Thus, they should understand the incentive structure behind the advisory received. How “fiduciary” is your advisor?

    First Ingredients First

A real client-centered approach: Investment portfolios make little sense until they are considered in light of a broad reaching estate plan, including an understanding the client’s balance sheet and her values and life’s goals.

    THE CHARACTER OF OUR WORK

    RIGOR

The successful navigation of financial markets and economic cycles requires much more than an awe-inspiring brand, clever-sounding-talk, and a perfectly appointed tie. Knowledge of the required fields and robust technological and banking platforms are only the most basic-level prerequisites. It all starts and ends with the quality and motivations of the people involved.

Preserving and growing our clients’ hard-earned wealth amidst global complexities and uncertainties demands rigorous thinking and intensely focused work. The type of work that can only flow from a culture that fosters critical thinking and meticulous attention to detail. That balances discipline with unconformity; fosters awareness of purpose and commitment, and breeds the kind relentless character that is humble enough to focus on the resulting quality of the work.

Performance results from the deep-level synchronicity that a team of individuals driven by such a work ethic can muster.

    The Problem With Macro

On any given day, 20 or 30 or 40 world-renown investment veterans argue eloquently for almost exactly opposing opinions regarding the future of any number of trends. If 50 plus years of academic research evidence that a trivial percentage of investment managers are able to consistently justify their fees, how is it that many advisors/brokers still construct portfolios on the basis of their “educated” guesses?

“Conservative” Is Not So Conservative Anymore

The dot.com crash and 2008/09 crises proved traditional diversification a failure. It took over 6 years for equity indexes to recoup the 2008/09 losses; Now there’s talk of expensive valuations across asset classes, all driven by the same factor: experimental monetary policies.

    NO B. S.

    CLARITY

It has taken almost two full decades of earnest thought and practice to arrive here: The ability to help our clients navigate the course ahead.

Decades of experience and questioning have nurtured our values and investment philosophy; these have guided the development of our investment process and research methodology and shaped our organizational structure and team culture. The firm we are today does not just stand for a series of values and an investment philosophy: It has been designed to have the capacity to execute on its promise.

Where clients are beset by an unrelenting flow of complicated and contradictory investing opinions, ambiguous economic assessments, and questionable incentives, we aim to bring clarity and confidence and empower their results.

    What Clients Want

What a client wants is not always what the client needs: Is there a line between “servicing” and “coaching?” How do we define and cross the knowledge asymmetry-divide in an industry in which what an advisor/ broker/ firm rep. is incentivized to do is not exactly what the client needs. In sum, how does the investor-client judge “quality.” Does he trust too much?

Who We Are

Since our inception as a small global macro research shop in 2004, our work has revolved around solving one key question:

How best to manage investments for wealthy entrepreneur business people and families?

The question might seem elementary but to this day a large number of wealthy families -including many operating their own family offices- fail to manage their investments in a way consistent with a prudent strategy for wealth accumulation.

Research shows that a majority - not a minority- of wealthy families end up losing large portions of their wealth even before first and second generation transfers. Less than 38% regain the positions they had once achieved; a statistic that repeats with surprising consistency across both emerging and developed markets regardless of the size and perceived strength of the wealth involved.

Many of us have been close witnesses to such loss: Relationships, clients of former employers, even, for some, close family members. These are the experiences that have brought us together as Harbor Ithaka, that drive our commitment to our clients and our search for solutions.

Harbor Ithaka Wealth Management is all about making sure that what our clients have constructed and accumulated over the years -what their work and families have come to stand for- is adequately protected. Not only against the myriad of risks out there, but also from complacency and misguided advice.
